Gail Patricia Pelley (nee Painter) was born in England on June 24, 1945. She came to Canada in 1946 and grew up in Winnipeg.
During her early adult years, Gail lived in Germany for a few years before moving to small towns in Manitoba and British Columbia. She returned to Winnipeg in 1980, where she soon began her career with the Province of Manitoba's Vital Statistics Department. Over the next 30 years, she worked in different departments before retiring in 2010.
Gail will be forever loved and deeply missed by her children, Kristine Jones (Jim), Lorraine Pelley, and Ronald Pelley (Trish), as well as her three grandsons, Steven, Michael, and Jonathon.
She will also be lovingly remembered by her brothers, David Painter (Debbie) and Rick Painter (George), along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family in England. Gail was predeceased by her parents Leslie and Elsie Painter in 1985, and by her brother Garry Painter in 2004.
Outside of work, Gail looked forward to playing bingo every Tuesday with her eldest daughter and close friends. She also loved doing puzzles, knitting, and spending summer days swimming with her grandsons.
Gail had a lifelong love of reading and could easily finish a novel in just two days. She especially looked forward to reading the Saturday paper, a tradition she continued throughout her life.
Friday evenings became a cherished family tradition. We would gather at Mom's place each week to enjoy our "junk food fix," catch up on the week's events, and share plenty of laughs. Those evenings together created memories that our family will treasure forever.
She and her lifelong friend, Carolyne, shared many happy visits, outings, and adventures over the years. Gail was a kind-hearted person who made friends wherever she went. Whether chatting with someone on the bus or forming lasting friendships in her apartment building and later at her care home, she had a way of making people feel at ease with her genuine friendliness and humour.
Gail passed away peacefully on August 3, 2026. Our family is sincerely grateful to the Emergency Department and fifth floor staff at Grace Hospital for the compassionate care and kindness they showed Gail during her final days.
Cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate Gail's life and honour her memory.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make a donation in Gail's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
