Lawrence 'Larry' Harrison Obituary

LAWRENCE WALTER HARRISON

July 22, 1945 - August 14, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Larry Harrison on August 14, 2024, at the Grace Hospital.

Larry will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 54 years, Ginny (nee Hewitson), daughters Paula and Erin, son-in-law Chris Leduchowski, "sin-in-law" Chris Martin, and adoring grandsons Cameron and Adrian "Leducheesecake."

Born and raised in Transcona, Larry first attended Central School and TCI, and then went on to earn his accounting certification, now known as CPA.

In 1967, Larry began his career with the City of Transcona. Following amalgamation, he joined the City of Winnipeg's Audit Department where he forged many friendships, still enjoying their monthly lunches until recent years when health issues prevented him from attending. After a brief stint as Winnipeg Public Library's Manager of Finance and Human Resources, he retired from the City at the age of 52. Until the time of his death, he worked as a freelance accountant, specializing in small business accounting and his personal favourite, income tax preparation. Larry always had a little more pep in his step come tax time!

After trading in his three-piece suits for a closet full of Hawaiian shirts, Larry embraced Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville lifestyle (well, as much as a high-strung, checklist-loving, statistics-obsessed accountant can), enjoying his daily Lamb's Palm Breeze amber rum and Pepsi at precisely five o'clock, and not a minute sooner, be it on the beach in Punta Cana or by the pool in his backyard paradise.

Larry loved the summer heat, walking with his "bride" and beloved dogs, making and sharing his wine, and hosting family gatherings. Tunes blaring, Larry barbecued not only all summer long, but would even venture out in the cold to prepare steaks for the family every Christmas Eve.

He will be lovingly remembered for his perfectly manicured nails, ridiculously soft hands, dry sense of humour, and his love of sweets - especially Ginny's homemade lemon meringue pie and the infamous licorice babies - and for having a spreadsheet for all occasions.

More than anything else, Larry was a devoted husband and father, his girls being his pride and joy. That being said, nothing made him light up more than visits from his cherished grandsons, with whom he always shared a special bond.

Thank you to Jim, Pat, Rick and especially Teddy, Larry's life-long friend and polar opposite, for all their phone calls and offers to help out over the past few years. Thank you also to great-nephew Robbie who would come without hesitation whenever we needed him.

In accordance with Larry's wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make donations in Larry's memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
