Lucy Poitras Obituary

Lucy Margaret Poitras

(nee Todoruk)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lucy, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Mom passed unexpectedly at the age of 94. She is now reunited with her loving husband of 72 years, Paul. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Mom was born in Russell, Mb July 9, 1927. Her family lived in town and she would frequently visit her grandparents on the farm in the Assiniboine Valley. Her grandfather from Ukraine played violin and there was music, singing and dancing in the kitchen. She completed grade 10 and when her mother fell ill, she stayed home to care for her.

In 1943 Lucy left Russell and moved to Winnipeg to work and live with her Aunty. It was Violet that introduced Lucy to her future husband. Wearing a beautiful blue dress, she wed Paul Poitras in May 1944 at the Sacred Heart Church.

Mom had a green thumb and loved her vegetable garden. Every year the yard was full of blossoming flowers. She was a great cook and master of preserves and pickling. She and Paul enjoyed travelling, camping at the trailer in Poplar Bay and hosting family for all occasions.

Over her lifetime she raised six girls and two boys and had opened her home to a niece and nephew. She was our Matriarch. She was strength, wisdom and the definition of what home is.

Lucy was predeceased by her parents Walter and Irene Todoruk, her loving husband of 72 years Paul Poitras, their firstborn bébé Marie, her sisters Jean, Anne and Helen, and granddaughter Kimberly May.

Lucy is survived by Denise (Larry) Cooke, Beverly (Garry Watson deceased), Ken (Carmen) Poitras, Yvonne (Larry) Florko, Diana (Chris) Compton, Dennis (Paulette), Susan (Brian) Bousquet Reed, Marilyn (Dave) Roy as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Lucy did not want a funeral or celebration of life. Lucy’s ashes will be put to rest by her family at St. Boniface Cemetery, Winnipeg, MB in late spring, when the sun is shining and flowers bloom.
