Melvin Rorabeck Obituary

Peacefully, on September 18, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, Melvin Rorabeck passed away at the age of 85.

Born on August 31, 1941, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Edward and Elizabeth Rorabeck, Mel grew up in Elmwood alongside his sisters, Helen, Joy, and Wendy. After joining the Navy at a young age, he returned to Winnipeg, where he married Sylvia Shewchuk. Together, they shared 63 wonderful years of marriage and built a loving family, raising four children: Jill (James), Julie (Steve), Jeff (Joelle), and Janis.

Known to many as "Big Guy," Mel was admired for his great sense of humour, friendly demeanour, and his ability to get straight to the point. After years of working at Pay Fair in Transcona and later at Champ Stainless, he retired and embraced one of his favourite roles in life: grandfather to Alexis, Liam, Joel, Caden, Jasper, and Gracie.

When he was not swearing at the Winnipeg Jets on television, Mel and Syl could often be found puttering around Southdale, making their way to St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, or stopping by 229 for a visit whenever the Starks were in town. Mel's simple approach to life was something many admired. Whether he was listening to the melancholy songs of Harry Chapin, watching train videos, or enjoying a meal at Marigold on St. Mary's, he never asked for much and found joy in life's simple pleasures.

Survived by his beloved wife, Sylvia, and their four children, Mel will be remembered for his devotion to family, his quick wit, and the comfort of his steady presence. He leaves behind countless cherished memories and a legacy of love that will continue through those who knew him best.

A celebration of Mel's life will be held in his honour. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the healthcare staff at St. Boniface Hospital for the compassionate care they provided.

Though we miss you dearly, we wait for the day we can hear you say once again,

"Last call for breakfast, dining car to the rear."
