Ron, an only child lived in a small house with his parents in Elmwood and later moved to St. Vital where he spent most of his childhood, playing every sport that was available to him. He played football and was quarterback for the St. Vital Mustangs, Captain of the Bantam NHL Leaf’s hockey team in Winnipeg, and goalie for a touring Bantam soccer team. As well as playing baseball and rugby, he curled and bowled for many years. He also played and refereed basketball and later coached youth hockey at East End CC. When he stopped playing, he enjoyed watching all sports but especially those played by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ron’s love of sports and infectious spirit drew him to build a community and lifelong connections throughout the city, giving him friends wherever he would go.
While Ron played many sports throughout his life, he is known as a golfer. As a child, he would walk along the Seine River, picking up balls and selling them to golfers at Windsor Park Golf Course giving him enough to play a few rounds of golf. At 24, Ron became a member of Wildewood Golf Club where he and his wife Anne would golf every summer and where they created lifelong friendships, it was their home away from home. Ron was the Wildewood Club Champion 4 times as well as the Club President, Club Vice-President and Golf Chairman. Ron was a member of Wildewood for 64 years and never stopped looking forward to the next time he would play a round of golf at the Club.
Ron also enjoyed music and the theatre and spent many summers with family and friends attending Rainbow Stage, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Pop Concerts.
Ron and Anne also liked to travel. They visited Scotland as well as many cities in Canada and the US. They would travel to San Diego twice a year to visit Geoff, Tammy and the boys and golf in the Winter.
