Russell Anderson Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Russell “Russ” Anderson on January 19, 2026, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 82.

Russ was born on May 15, 1943, in Poplar Park, Manitoba, to Arni and Martha Anderson. His childhood was defined by the marsh at Anderson Landing, where he was raised among a vast network of Anderson cousins who were more like siblings than extended family. Together, they navigated the challenges of rural life with a healthy dose of mischief and a bond that lasted a lifetime.

For decades, Russ was a familiar and reliable face at Manitoba Hydro, where he served as a dedicated shopkeeper. Outside of work, he was a man of simple but deep passions. He had a profound respect for military history and veterans, serving for a time as a Reservist. He found peace in nature—especially watching ducks, other birds, and squirrels—and was often found with his headphones on, joyfully singing out of tune to his favorite country and bluegrass music.

A proud Manitoban with Icelandic roots, Russ never lost his taste for the traditional. He could always be talked into a helping of Rúllupylsa, hard fish, brown bread or Vinarterta, though he famously drew the line at skyr.

Russ was predeceased by his beloved wife, Diana; his son-in-law, Sean; his brother, Allan; and his parents. His memory will be cherished by his daughter, Jennifer; his son, Jason; his brother, Merle (Debbie); the many cousins from the Landing; and the friends who became his chosen family.

A memorial service will be held on June 14, 2026 at the St. James Anglican Church in Poplar Park as part of the annual service, with interment to follow. Time is TBD.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Russ’s memory to the Royal Canadian Legion, an organization he held in the highest regard.
